The Westford School Committee, Citizens Advisory Committee, is conducting a survey regarding full day kindergarten (FDK).
Here is background information regarding the Westford Public School (WPS) current kindergarten program:
* Westford offers a free half-day program where children attend either a morning or afternoon session.
* The kindergarten level Common Core State Standards (i.e. end of year expectations) are the same for Massachusetts half-day and full-day programs.
* Westford currently offers two district-wide integrated FDK classrooms at the Miller School. Children without Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are chosen by a lottery system and pay a fee to attend.
* WPS offers an extended day program (fee based) for children in the half-day program. This is not an extension of the academic day. In some schools the extended day program is only available through a lottery system.
Westford topped our list for “Best Schools for Your Buck” on the strength of its graduation rate of 98.5%, the fourth highest in the state, and its relative affordability with median home values under $450,000, according to the most recent census data. While Westford boasts high rankings for its elementary and middle schools — including Day Elementary and Blanchard and Stony Brook middle schools — it’s best known for Westford Academy, the high school. The school’s test scores set it apart: 98.9% of 10th graders received the “Advanced” score on the MCAS. The school offers a range of Advanced Placement courses, including computer science, studio art and music theory. Given the quality of coursework available, it’s not surprising that 92.5% of Westford students went on to higher education, the third
highest in the state.

Dear Westford Family:
Welcome back! With the start of a new school year, I want to let you know that the Superintendent Open House gatherings will reconvene this fall per the schedule below. I hope you will be able to join me for relaxed and open conversations. To accommodate a variety of schedules, we have arranged a few evening Open Houses in addition to the morning meetings. Mornings sessions will begin at 9:30 AM and evening gatherings will begin at 7:00 PM.
If necessary, notifications of a schedule change will be communicated via email. Should weather dictate a delayed opening of school, a morning Open House will be canceled; however an evening meeting will take place. In the event of a school cancellation, the morning or evening meeting will be canceled.
Every year I look forward to getting together. I hope that this year’s schedule will allow you to join me.
Everett V. Olsen, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
